Recognising Problem Gambling

Gambling is intended as entertainment. When it shifts from a leisure activity to a source of financial stress or emotional harm, that is a sign that support may be needed.

Common warning signs include:

  • Spending more money or time gambling than planned
  • Borrowing money or selling possessions to fund gambling
  • Chasing losses - continuing to play in an attempt to recover money lost
  • Neglecting work, study, family, or social commitments because of gambling
  • Feeling anxious, irritable, or depressed when not gambling
  • Concealing gambling activity from family members or friends
  • Gambling to escape stress, anxiety, or other negative feelings

Experiencing one or more of these does not automatically indicate a serious disorder, but it does indicate that a pause and honest self-assessment are warranted. Free, confidential assessments are available through the organisations listed in the section below.

Self-Exclusion and Spending Limits

Licensed casino operators are required by their regulators to provide responsible gambling tools. These tools are available in the account settings section of most platforms and take effect immediately or within a short processing window.

Deposit Limits

Players can set daily, weekly, or monthly deposit caps. Once a limit is set, it cannot be increased until a mandatory cooling-off period (typically 24 hours to 7 days, depending on the operator) has passed. Reducing a limit takes effect immediately.

Session Time Limits and Reality Checks

Session time limits restrict how long a player can remain logged in during a single sitting. Reality check notifications alert players at set intervals, for example, every 30 or 60 minutes, showing time spent and net session result.

Self-Exclusion

Self-exclusion allows a player to block access to their account for a defined period (typically 6 months, 1 year, or permanently). During a self-exclusion period, the operator must not send promotional communications to that player. Most licensed jurisdictions also operate multi-operator self-exclusion schemes:

  • GAMSTOP (United Kingdom), gamstop.co.uk
  • CRUKS (Netherlands), kansspelautoriteit.nl
  • Spelpaus (Sweden), spelpaus.se
  • Oasis (Germany), bundeszentrale-fuer-gesundheitliche-aufklaerung.de

Players who are concerned about their gambling should contact their casino operator directly or use the support organisations listed below before the situation escalates.
